Sir
Brian Urquhart helped to set up the United Nations in 1945 and
was involved in guiding its development for the next forty years,
serving several UN Secretaries-General. Urquhart was involved
in overseeing many UN peacekeeping missions and negotiations in
Africa and Asia, including the UN's first major peacekeeping effort
during the Suez Crisis of 1956. It was there that Urquhart proposed
the symbolic blue helmets for the UN Peacekeeping forces that
are still used today to distinguish UN Peacekeepers. Sir Brian
Urquhart has written several books, including his autobiography,
A Life in Peace and War, biographies about UN peacemakers
he worked with, Dag Hammarskjöld and Ralph Bunche, and a number
of books detailing suggestions for making the United Nations more
effective and other ideas about steps towards world peace.
