For
more than fifty years, Fran Schmidt has been writing and teaching
about peace. She and her late sister, Grace Contrino Abrams created
two of the first peace education and conflict resolution curriculums
for young people in the 1960s. After her sister died, she created
the Grace Contrino Abrams Peace Education Foundation, and then
Peace Education International, developing more than a dozen more
peace curriculums for students from preschool to high school.
Her works have been translated into many languages and are used
in thousands of schools all around the world. For her work and
dedication to educating for a more peaceful world, she has received
numerous awards, including Common Cause's Public Service Achievement
Award, the Golden Balloon Award by the World Children’s Day Foundation
at the United Nations, the National Education Film Festival’s
Silver Apple Award, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Vision Award.
Her latest project is to find a creative team to animate her Gopher
Peace and the Peace Rangers program.
