Oskar
Schindler is both the most unlikely of heroes and also the perfect example of
a hero -- an ordinary and flawed person who took action and did the right thing
when faced with grave injustice. Schindler was a hard-drinking, womanizing businessman
who quickly joined the Nazi party when he saw that his business would profit working
with the Nazi regime. But when he witnessed the gruesome atrocities Jews were
suffering, he did not sit by as many others did at the time. He spent all his
war profits on bribes and negotiations that helped to rescue 1200 Jews that would
have been sent to concentration camps during World War II. His life story was
depicted in several documentaries, including the best-selling book, Schindler's
Ark and the Academy Award-winning Steven Spielberg movie based on the book,
Schindler's List.
