(1937-)

American Actor, Director, Environmentalist, Philanthropist

birthdate: August 18
birthplace:
Santa Monica, California

If you've ever seen Jeremiah Johnson or The Horse Whisperer at the movies or on television, you can see how much Robert Redford loves the wonders of the natural world. He has played the Sundance Kid, riding through the wide open spaces and directed A River Runs Through It which brings to the screen some of the most beautiful scenery in the United States. Early in his life, Robert Redford wanted to be a painter and even studied the art in Europe. But when he moved to New York, he started studying the art of acting, and from there went on to play many characters on the stage, television and film. Since he became one of the best known movie stars in the world in the 1960s, he has used his fame and riches to support those less fortunate than himself and to open the movie industry to deeper exploration of humanity through The Sundance Institute in Utah. In the process, he has also been one of the biggest supporters of the movement to save our environment, winning the United Nations Global 500 Award, the Audubon Medal, the Earth Day International Award, the Nature Conservancy Award and many others.
