Qingrong Ma started the Xingfu Village Women’s Association after working on her own to improve the lives of women throughout the countryside in the Chinese township where she lives. Under her leadership, a team of volunteers now help to educate their communities about gender equality to help prevent violence against women; mediate family disputes, and provide help for abused women. Qingrong Ma was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 as part of the 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize project.
