Evaristo Nugkuag Ikanan has devoted his life to helping organize the indigenous people of the Amazon Basin to stand up for their civil, economic, human and political rights. He helped create the Coordinating Group of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA), a federation of national Indian organizations from nine neighboring states of the Amazon basin. Nugkuag received the Right Livelihood Award in 1986 and the Goldman Environmental Prize in 1991 for his human rights and environmental work.
