"Since
the dawn of time, humans have turned to stories to help them understand
the world.
When they're working at their highest purpose, stories open us
up to a more compassionate view of one another."
Before
pursuing a career as an award-winning fiction writer and editor,
Shannon Cain worked hands-on as a social change activist, heading
a women's health agency that provided health education workshops
for homeless women; creating a fundraising company that secured
corporate and foundation grants for numerous nonprofit organizations;
directing a philanthropic foundation that gave grants to women
and girls; and running a nonprofit women's literary press. Although
the type of work she does now is very different, Shannon Cain's
passion for creating a better world has only intensified. "So
when I shifted careers from philanthropy to the literary arts,
in some ways I was just shifting my activist vehicle from fundraising
to fiction."
She sees telling stories as a powerful way to educate, heal and
inspire compassion, and believes that "careful stewardship
of a culture is our best strategy for bringing about social justice."
As a writer, Shannon Cain sees herself as one of the stewards
of a culture of peace and uses her creativity to help create a
more peaceful, just and sustainable world.
